This is a long and probably unnecessary answer to your question, but it's what I've worked out and it's a pretty good way to avoid going insane.Want to start playing? Read this sidebar! Later on, I can un-forbid all of the undead corpses at the map edge if I feel like removing the clutter, and use d-b-c to reclaim all of the goblinite in my fort. Products will be bone, skull, hoof, horn and the like (no meat, fat, prepared organs or skin). ![]() tholurist at 15:57 I updated my answer to include this distinction. Only those of wild animals (typically killed from hunting or traps) can be processed at the butcher's shop. The question is misleading because the title says 'forgotten beast' which is non-sentient and butcherable but the body refers to a 'were-chinchilla,' which is a sentient night creature and not butcherable. Corpses left to rot will become skeletons. I can forbid all of the teeth for now if I wish, since teeth do not rot. A butcher's shop is operated by any dwarf with the 'butchery' labor enabled. Pets and small animals also cannot be butchered. I can change the mining burrow so that dwarfs won't go get stuff that's still in dangerous areas, and I can use z-stocks to dump the goblin parts (they have more than one name) and leave the giant toad parts (they have one name) for haulers to take to the butcher. Dwarf ethics forbids them from butchering sentient creatures such as goblins or elves, so these must be left to rot safely on their own to get to the skeleton. I annihilate them in some way that leaves corpses, bits of corpses, and dozens of teeth. Now the goblins come into my fort, riding on their giant toads. When the siege started, I confined all of my dwarfs to the mining burrow, which is all the dug out areas of the fort, so nobody will go running out there, which is good, but I don't like getting spammed with "forbidden area" messages, so I can go to z-stocks and forbid all off the undead corpses and body parts. The goblins kill the undeads at the edge of the map. I get an undead siege, and a goblin siege at the same time. The game will ignore dumped outside refuse if that option is off.Ī sane way to handle all of this is to leave it on, but use z-stocks to micro a little. Creature corpses have many uses, including when they are butchered or rot down completely to bones. Updates and releases will still be posted, as will the questions thread for those needing help. 'Butchering' a skeleton produces only a skull, bones, cartilage and other non-decaying tissues. What exactly is a valid corpse for butchery/source for bones The wiki is very much no help here. Please note, the subreddit is currently closed to new user submissions, as part of the ongoing Reddit fiasco. I tried to butcher him fresh, but no dice, so I set his corpse in the refuse pile outside and when that degraded into a Skeleton I thought I could use it as a source of bones but the game also doesn't recognize this as valid.
